The Band Workshop

In a Band Workshop, there is always a structured class with warm-ups, new instrument exploration, and band practice for the BIG SHOW.  It is important to get everyone comfortable on the instruments they are playing for the semester and daily home practice and listening is highly encouraged to increase success.

The classes begin with warm-ups. Each student warms up on their primary instrument first and continues on with other instruments they may play in the band. The band plays together during this warm up at the same tempo and playing the same exercises together as a band. The catch with the warm-ups in class is that you have to play along with your band. This teaches SFRS rockers how to play and work together (i.e. If the tempo is too fast, just ask the drummer to slow it down a bit so you can do your warm-ups successfully). A huge part of being in a band and working that closely with people on artistic experssion is the high importance of clear and positive communication about the music.

After warm-ups, everyone is encouraged to explore a new instrument of their choice.  Maybe the drummer always wanted to play piano, or the guitar player wants to check out the drums.  Either way, we want everyone to play musical chairs, and see what it's like to play on another instrument.

The rest of the class time is spent working on the current material in line for the BIG SHOW. Once the material is all learned, the band comes together to rehearse the songs as a set they will eventually be playing live. The BIG SHOW at the end of each semester is what we prepare for all semester long. Each student is guided through learning their own part for each song during the sessions. We may spend one practice wood-shedding the parts of two songs, and the next session going over that song and wood-shedding parts for the next song in line. The progress of the band depends on the concentration and preparation of each band mate. Being in a band is like being on a sports team, the more a band member is on his/her game, the better the band will sound. This is the main reason we highly recommend each student listens and practices outside of weekly band rehearsal time. The best accompaniment to the SFRS band workshop is having private lessons outside of band practice. There are SFRS teachers listed HERE

Throughout the semester as students progress towards their potential, we want everyone to remember that learning music is like putting pennies in your piggy bank. Each hour you practice is like a dollar in your musical piggy bank. You will be wealthy with knowledge and musical talent in no time!  It's up to you!!!
